A Shaky Season for Student Loans

Shortly after New Year's Day, Pat Watkins, financial aid director at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., placed a worried call to National Education, a student loan company she has been working with for nearly two decades. She had heard rumors that the company was no longer funding federal Stafford and PLUS (Parent Loans for Undergraduate Students) education loans, but had received no official word from the company.

She found out that the phone of National Education's local rep had been disconnected. Later she learned that Chicago-based National Education was not planning to accept applications for new loans for the spring semester after Jan. 15, though they planned to fund disbursements for students who received loans for the fall.

Federal Loans Lose Funders

That was the first surprise.

UPA govt dividing people: Rajnath Singh

We demand that farmers should be provided with cheaper loans and they should get farm income insurance cover instead of crop insurance, said Mr Rajnath adding that his party would raise issues pertaining to Indo-US deal, snooping in sensitive areas in the Parliament.

It is for the first time in the history that a government is trying to re-introduce a Bill (Office of Profit Bill), which, has been returned by the President, without effecting any changes in it. It is amazing.

Coming to Punjab, Mr Rajnath Singh announced that the SAD-BJP combine would contest Assembly elections under the leadership of Mr Parkash Singh Badal. He also projected Mr Badal as , Future CM, and said the people were suffering under Mr Amarinder Singh-led state government. He lauded role of the Hind Samachar Group of Newspapers in countrys fight against terrorism and said sacrifices of groups family members and 62 employees of the group failed to deflect Vijay Kumar Chopra, Managing Editor of Hind Samachar, or affect his determination against terrorism.

Candidates debate whether election rides on power plant

The potential split vote among candidates that are skeptical of the power plant is a concern to Highwood Generating Station opponents. Kahn said some coal-fired plant foes asked her to drop out of the race, a move that would have given McKnight a better chance against Stebbins. Kahn declined to do so.

Kahn said that the coal-fired facility wasn't the only issue that made her run. Kahn said that as she campaigned door to door in her neighborhood, the power plant issue was tops. But, she said, a number of people complained about how the city treated the Humane Society of Cascade County when the city took over the local animal shelter in July.

Meanwhile, coal plant opponents may hold a bit of an edge in the commissioners' race, according to at least one candidate.

"It's the math," McKnight said.

The alien Klaatu from The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) * * * Often something happens in the world of sport that transcends the mundane realities of life. The San Antonio Spurs winning their 4th NBA championship is a recent example. To Spurs fans, at least, that victory will resonate. To some fans it will offer lifelong validation of allegiance to their team. As fans, as human beings navigating this thing we call day-to-day life, we need these moments of transcendence. They help us to put our own toils in a grander perspective; they remind us that we are capable of bigger things. They help us to celebrate our very ordinary human-ness while they illuminate the intricate ways in which sport and history weave themselves into the fabric of our society and into the threads of our being.

Cool blue is the hot color of the moment

On the spring runways in New York last September, manicurists from Creative Nail Design used the frosty blue Turquoise Tint for Chris Han's show and custom-mixed tones of light blue for models at Karen Walker and Charlotte Ronson. In a recent GQ photo spread, Rihanna sported a robin's-egg-blue polish on her nails that threatened to pull focus from her skimpy gold Tomas Meier swimsuit.

Sky, the Hard Candy shade made famous in 1995 when Alicia Silverstone name-dropped it on "Late Show With David Letterman," is also back on the market. But nostalgic fans hoping to score a bottle — with matching plastic ring — may have to do a bit of digging. Sephora, the line's exclusive purveyor, is sold out of the $7 color on its Web site. A similar shade, For Audrey by China Glaze ($6.50), nearly matches a Tiffany & Co.'s trademark color.

Nurses who left jobs endangered children, prosecutors say

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. For months, the nurses complained that they were subject to demeaning and unfair working conditions not what they were promised when they came to America from the Philippines in search of a better life. So they abruptly quit.

But in doing so, they put more than their careers at risk: Prosecutors hit them with criminal charges on suspicion they jeopardized the lives of terminally ill children they were in charge of watching.
