There was no plan to give Arizona's children the early start they need and deserve. Teacher pay was lagging, and we weren't doing what was necessary to support our new teachers and keep our best educators in the classroom. Phoenix was the largest city in the nation without a university-based medical school and our state was not graduating enough students with college degrees to keep up with our growth.Fast-forward to today. We've created a new grade level by making full-day kindergarten available to every Arizona family. We've made historic investments in early childhood education and in teacher pay. We've broken ground on an all-new medical campus, tripled our contribution to student financial aid, and built up our universities.This is progress, and it is precisely where we needed to go.Now, we must move quickly this year to implement the voter-approved initiative aimed at early childhood.

To all Coloradans outside this chamber, good morning.
To Lieutenant Governor OBrien, President Groff, Speaker Romanoff, Mayor Hickenlooper, Executive Directors, Board of Education members, Supreme Court justices, Treasurer Kennedy, Attorney General Suthers, Secretary of State Coffman, Honorable Representatives and Senators, thank you for being here today.
We are blessed with several other special guests as well: Representative Perlmutter, local government leaders, and Ute Mountain Ute Chairman Ernest House Sr. Thank you all for everything you do for Colorado.
Colorados first lady, Jeannie, two of our children, Tally and Sam, and my mother, Ethel, are here as well. Jeannie: Thank you for everything you do for the people of our state, particularly your focus on mental-health issues.
Complex GI Bill makes for a rocky road from combat to college
STARKVILLE, Miss. - By the time he completed his four-year stint in the military three summers ago, Frank Wills had gotten used to taking orders, carrying a rifle and taking pictures of the dead as a combat photographer.
He knew how to be a Marine. He hadn't a clue how a Marine becomes a college student.
Neither, it seemed, did anyone else on campus. Advisers at one school Wills attended gave him incorrect information. Officials at a second offered no help at all. Often, he says, he felt like "the new kid who didn't fit in."
G.I. EDUCATION: Veterans' plans aren't easy to gauge
The Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944, better known as the GI Bill, helped turn a college education into a right of middle-class America. It covered the cost for millions of World War II veterans as compensation for having disrupted their lives to serve.
Future wide open for Skyline senior
His Skyline teammates tried to recruit him to Minnesota early on, but he asked them to stop. "It's my decision," said Cooper, a 2007 SportsDay first-team All-Area selection. "Where I am most comfortable is where I'm going." Cooper, No. 13 on SportsDay's Area Top 100, said he will visit Oklahoma or Wisconsin next weekend and possibly Kansas the weekend of Feb. 1. He visited Kansas State in the fall. Cooper said if he's blown away by Texas Tech, he could commit this weekend. "It's the school that's been coming after me for awhile," Cooper said. He plans to let things play out, but his cousin, Victor Hunter of Irving Nimitz, is a backup middle linebacker at Tech. And his family wants him to stay close to home.
