| Disputed Accord in Student Loan Case
Department officials portrayed the settlement reached with the Nebraska Education Loan Network, or Nelnet, as a defeat for the for-profit company. They noted that they were declining to pay an estimated $882 million in additional reimbursement requests that the company has pending under the same loophole, and ending future payments on such loans to other lenders as well unless the lenders can prove, through audits, that they qualify for the funds. Nelnet officials themselves, too, took issue with the department’s finding but said they had settled the case to allow the company to move on. But Congressional and other critics accused the department of going soft on Nelnet and other lenders. They blasted administration officials for failing to fully follow the recommendation of the department’s inspector general, who contended in a September audit report that Nelnet should be forced to repay all funds earned through the loophole, though which lenders were paid a 9.5 percent government subsidy on a certain class of student loans.
Conference of Municipalities Asks Rell to Push Tax Relief for ...
With tax anxiety threatening many state cities and towns, the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM) Wednesday asked legislators and Gov. M. Jodi Rell to provide tax relief. Earlier, the governor had proposed a cap on municipal property tax revenues, but CCM [www.ccm-ct.org] has warned her idea is not the magic bullet needed to ease the burden on local taxpayers and asked Rell to pull back on that proposal. "Unless the governor and the General Assembly act this session, property taxpayers in towns and cities across the state face steep property tax hikes, huge reductions in public services or both," said Elizabeth Patterson, president of the CCM and mayor of Mansfield. Westport First Selectman Gordon F. Joseloff, in a brief telephone interview yesterday morning, said there is a need to be concerned about finances and that Westport will be getting "a little bit more money" from the state.

He said they did not discuss Ballard's plan to take control of the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. The merger of the former IPD and the Marion County Sheriff's Department put that power in the Sheriff's hands. Ballard has said the authority belongs in the Mayor's Office. Sheriff Anderson says the question of control should be put forward in a referendum. He says voters should decide who controls the department. And, he says voters should decide whether the consolidation should be reversed. I asked the Mayor-elect about that proposal. He said, "I don't think we're ever going to come to that. People know what I ran on. I said that up front, repeatedly. I think we've had that referendum. That said, Sheriff Anderson is a great public servant. A great man. No problem whatsoever on that. I'm not here to pick a fight.
